Thrasher’s Skate Rock. Three words that mean so much to me, and really anyone that ever picked up a skateboard and plugged in the boom box.
Skateboarding and punk music have gone hand and hand. Energy, rebellion and individualism. They are just two things that fit so well together.
Punk bands have been singing about skateboarding for years, and have used skateboard imagery on their flyers and ads. Record labels like Goldenrod and Beware led the charge of skate rock / skate punk. Then Thrasher made a big name with the Skate Rock series of compilations.
Even today when you look at punk flyers, you can always find a few with skateboarding skulls or somebody shredding right there in black and white.
I think the connection can only get stronger. More and more parallels are being drawn from skateboarding and punk. Punk festivals with skateboarding, bands putting out skate decks, the list goes on and on.
I searched for a batch of the aforementioned flyers and found some radical ones with all kinds of skateboarding imagery.
Shred fast and stick to the curbs.
